Product Details

This charming handmade terracotta Santon from Marseille features a villager with a red hat, yellow top, and blue sash, carrying a chicken. Painstakingly hand-painted, this figurine captures the essence of Provençal life and craftsmanship. With 27 of these figures available, they can be acquired individually or as part of a larger collection.

Santons, meaning “little saints,” are an integral part of the Christmas tradition in Provence. Originating during the French Revolution when public nativity scenes were banned, Santons allowed families to celebrate the nativity at home. Over the years, the tradition evolved to include not just the Holy Family, but villagers, artisans, and animals, each representing the daily life and spirit of Provence. Today, these figures, crafted and painted by hand, bring the warmth and character of the region into holiday displays worldwide. This particular villager, proudly holding a chicken, is a delightful nod to rural life and adds a touch of Provençal heritage to any nativity scene.
